Mayor John Duthie and the Governing Body offer the following safety tips for the Nor’easter that is making its way to our area.  Dangerous winds and heavy rain are predicated to begin this afternoon.  The safest place to be during high winds is indoors

  • Check the area outside your home for unsecured objects such as tree limbs, garbage cans, yard debris as they can project towards your  home or car and cause damage
  • Anchor objects such as gas grills or propane tanks
  • Close and secure patio umbrellas and furniture
  • Bring loose objects indoors such as planters, garbage cans, garden tools, toys
  • Avoid down power lines or anything that may be touching down power lines.  To report a downed wire or power outages contact PSE&G 1-800-436-PSEG
  • Charge cell phones, tablets and other battery powered devices
  • Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food, bottled water
  • If you are driving during high winds keep both hands on the wheel and slow down, watch for objects blowing across the roadway and keep a safe distance from cars in adjacent lanes

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin placed 14 counties encompassing the northern, central and northern coastal areas of New Jersey under a drought warning due to ongoing precipitation deficits and deteriorating water supply conditions, particularly storage levels in reservoirs. Commissioner Martin signed an Administrative Order designating a drought warning for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. The goal of the drought warning is to preserve and balance available water supplies in an effort to avert more serious water shortages in the future. The Roseland Police Department would like to reassure the community that although there have been coyote sightings in the area there is no cause for alarm.  To date, coyotes have been documented in nearly 400 municipalities from all 21 counties.

The following guidelines can help reduce the likelihood of conflicts with coyotes:
- Never feed a coyote
- Put garbage in tightly closed containers that cannot be tipped over
- Remove sources of water, especially in dry climates
- Put away bird feeders at night.
- Install motion sensitive lighting around your home

If you observe coyotes in the daytime that show no fear of humans immediately contact the Police  Department at 973-226-8700 and the Division of Fish and Wildlife at 908-735-8793
