Vandalism & Littering at Harrison Ave Complex - May 6, 2024

Field

It has come to the attention of the Borough that vandalism and littering has occurred on the new turf fields at the Harrison Ave Complex over this weekend. We are absolutely appalled that before the Complex is even officially open that this type of carelessness and inappropriate behavior would occur. The Borough will investigate who may have caused this vandalism and will hold the actors responsible to pay for all damages. In addition to increased police monitoring throughout the area, we will also be installing video cameras throughout the property to deter this type of behavior and to further assist in holding those accountable who decide to treat our Borough parks with disregard. Residents who may be on or near the Complex are asked to report any damage seen or suspicious activity to the Police Department at 973-226-8700.

While the fields are essentially complete, note that work on the Complex continues. The new Snack Shack will be delivered and erected this week and areas will be closed off for the safety of the public. As other construction, maintenance, and repairs take place leading up to the official grand opening on June 1, please note that fields and sections of the Complex may close for a few hours or for the entire day. We ask for your patience and understanding as finishing touches are made so this Complex can officially open for full use.

Lastly, residents should be aware that while both Thomas O’Beirne Field and Harrison Field are open for casual use, any organized games or use of the fields by an organization or outside group does require a Facility Use Permit to be filled out and approved. Questions about this process can be directed to the Recreation Department at 973-403-6854.

Please also note that with the new turf fields, additional rules and regulations are in place to protect the playing surface so as to not cause damage and closure of the fields for repairs and additional maintenance beyond basic upkeep. The following will not be allowed on the turf fields:

  • The use of sharp objects during play including wearing cleats, spikes or high heeled shoes;
  • Sharp objects such as tent stakes, corner flags, spikes or poles that may penetrate and damage the turf;
  • Wearing of any kind of jewelry;
  • Chairs, tables, tents or lawn furniture of any kind;
  • Food and beverages including, but not limited, to sunflower seeds, chewing gum, nuts, and candy;
  • Chewing tobacco of any kind;
